Dual or multiple paths

I scrolled back through some posts to see if I could learn some answers to some basic questions I had. It did but it brought up questions from me. I read on more then one post or a response to a post where individuals claim to be following 2 or even 3 paths. ie... One person has been initiated in sarvamnaya and another path. One person was experienced in Kriya or has been pretty far and then now is looking to become enlightened in sarvamnaya. The question is: Is having more than one path common, can you follow two? How to know if another path is compatible with this one? Are there benefits to that OR is it sortof a'la carte' system so one can pick the exact path they are on by taking from several paths?

In some cases we find they are not 2 and overlap . For example non conceptual awareness in tantra, Dzogchen, mahamudra and zen. Same with diety yoga ( can ) lead to effortless abiding in pure consciousness in both Hinduism and Buddhism . It seems.
